Prison Reform

The prison system is a high profile topic right now and I’m pleased that at last words like ‘rehabilitation’ are being used. With 53% of women in prison reporting having suffered some type of domestic abuse as a child and around a quarter of all prisoners having been in care, doesn’t the conversation need to go further to consider PREVENTION?

I was talking to a women’s prison chaplain this week, who reported nearer 75% of their prison population being previously looked after and many who will reoffend to return to a place of safety and belonging. I also work with care leavers who are often having to present as homeless when they turn 18 as there is no other accommodation available. Surely, the link is clear! Ok so its just one consideration in a complex conundrum but lets get the conversation moving!
